Role Summary

The Programme Officer will support the planning, management, and implementation of projects specifically related to ivory stockpile management across various EPI member countries. Existing projects include support to the general management, security and chain of custody of ivory, as well as, the implementation of the Stockpile Management System (SMS) a bespoke digital tool for secure storage of ivory inventory data. 

This role is ideally suited to a mid career professional, with experience in security and/or implementing Standard Operating Procedures. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic French speaking team player, able to manage time efficiently and travel regularly.


  • Planning for the implementation of the Stockpile Management System (SMS);

  • Implementation and supporting the use of the SMS, including inventorying and auditing ivory storerooms.

  • Development and implementation of standard operating procedures for the management of ivory and other wildlife products in government custody;

  • Supporting the assessment of storeroom security against the gold standards guidelines and supporting Governments in making the necessary improvements to storeroom security.

  • The work will involve providing technical support in the project planning phase, training, conducting inventories, holding meetings and workshops, documenting processes and report writing.

  • The Programme Officer will provide support to the EPI Technical Director on:

    • Developing training and publicity tools;

    • Fundraising proposals and donor reports;

    • Developing work plans.

Participating Governments include: all EPI signatory countries, and any other states that may approach the EPI Foundation for support.



Full-time consultancy role, initial contract of 12 months with a 2-month probation period. A strong possibility for extension after the 12 months.


Reports directly to Ruth Musgrave (Technical Director - SMS).

Quarterly work plans with deliverables will be jointly agreed with the Technical Director.



Salary to be agreed dependent upon experience. Expenses will be reimbursed in line with EPI Foundation Expenses Policy.  


Qualifications & Requirements

  • University degree in a related field (management, security, biological science).

  • At least 5 years of experience working with international organizations or governments.

  • Must be fluent in both English and French.

  • Good ICT skills, and ease with basic Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint). The SMS is easy to understand given good IT skills, and any necessary training would be provided to potential candidates.

  • Highly organized, detail orientated with excellent writing skills and with a practical hands-on attitude to work.

  • Experience with inventory work; or security assessments or security of high value goods or development of procedures and protocols highly desirable.

  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to adapt work plan/process to the situation, with the ability to work effectively with multicultural and multidisciplinary partners.

  • A good understanding of Africa its conservation landscape.

  • An enthusiastic and committed self-starter who is able to work well independently.

  • Experience in providing training or security assessments would be an advantage.



Remote working based in Europe or Africa - with regular travel to EPI or other countries (minimum of 10 trips a year). (Please note the EPI Foundation will not cover the cost for re-location).
