The African Coalition

The Ivory Trade
Having successfully achieved its objectives, Stop Ivory formally closed in December 2020.

Stockpile Management

The Gambia

Gambia, the smallest country on the African mainland, does not have any surviving elephants. It joined the EPI in 2015, signalling a welcome commitment to join in conservation efforts on the continent, including the ending of illegal wildlife exports.

Tragically the elephant, which was once The Gambia’s national emblem, was long ago hunted to extinction here. The last recorded sighting (and subsequent shooting) of an elephant was in 1913.

As a member of the EPI, the Gambia contributes to the fight against the illegal ivory trade and the trafficking of ivory through the country.
