The Elephant Protection Initiative Foundation (EPI Foundation) will host a high-level global webinar titled “Nigeria’s Forest Elephants” on Tuesday, June 9 at 11:00 AM - 12:30 PM West Africa Time/British Summer Time to spotlight the urgent conservation challenges facing Nigeria’s remaining forest elephant populations and the efforts underway to protect them.
The webinar will premiere two new short documentary films showcasing Nigeria’s endangered forest elephants:
A film by Wild Aid Africa for Africa Nature Investors (ANI) focusing on elephant conservation efforts in Okomu National Park, Edo State; and
A film by Erin Wildlife Conservation Trust (EWCT) highlighting the survival of forest elephants in Itasin Forest, Ogun State.

The event will bring together the Nigerian authorities, conservation leaders, policymakers, environmental advocates, and participants from around the world for timely discussions on the future of Nigeria’s elephants, whose populations remain critically vulnerable.
“Nigeria’s remaining forest elephants are a symbol of both the richness of our biodiversity and the urgency of our conservation challenge. I am encouraged by the growing commitment of government institutions, conservation organizations, and local communities working together to secure a future for elephants in Nigeria.” Sharon Ikeazor, Chair, Board of Trustees, Elephant Protection Initiative Foundation and Former Minister of Environment, Nigeria.
“Forest elephants are an irreplaceable part of Africa’s natural heritage, yet their survival is increasingly under threat. Through this webinar, we hope to shine a global spotlight on the remarkable conservation work being carried out in Nigeria and to inspire stronger collaboration in protecting these extraordinary animals and the forests they sustain.” John E. Scanlon AO, CEO, Elephant Protection Initiative Foundation.
The webinar aims not only to raise awareness of the precarious plight of Nigeria’s few hundred remaining forest elephants – threatened by habitat loss and poaching – but also to highlight the growing conservation efforts helping safeguard their future.
Nigeria has been a valued member of the Elephant Protection Initiative (EPI) since 2018. The EPI is an alliance of African countries working together through shared policies and coordinated action to conserve elephants and protect wildlife habitats across the continent.
